Choosing the Right Loft Bed

A loft bed raises the sleeping platform to create usable space underneath, making it a practical option for children's rooms where floor space matters. When comparing loft beds, check the mattress size, overall bed height, access style, under-bed space and the manufacturer's mattress and safety requirements.

Check the mattress size and maximum height

The raised sleeping platform must be used with the mattress size and maximum mattress height specified for that loft bed. A mattress that is too thick can reduce the effective height of the guardrail, so always follow the individual product instructions and mattress-height marking.

Single or King Single?

Our current loft range includes selected Single and King Single designs. A standard Australian Single mattress is approximately 92 x 188 cm, while a King Single is approximately 107 x 203 cm. Check the individual product page for the exact mattress size required.

Compare ladder and staircase access

Selected loft beds use a ladder, while others use a storage staircase. Staircase models generally need more floor space but may add built-in storage. Check the access position and full outside dimensions before deciding which layout works best in the room.

Measure ceiling and under-bed space

Measure the full room height as well as the loft bed's width, length and height. Consider practical clearance above the mattress and what you want to use the space below for. Keep the raised bed clear of ceiling fans, lights and blind or curtain cords in line with the manufacturer's guidance.

OUR MATTRESS RECOMMENDATION FOR LOFT BEDS

Eco Kids Bunk Mattress

Choosing the right mattress depth is especially important on a raised sleeping platform. The Eco Kids Bunk Mattress is only 14.5 cm deep, giving parents a lower-profile mattress option without giving up the comfort and support growing kids need. Its low-profile design makes it a strong option to consider for loft beds where it meets the individual bed's maximum permitted mattress height.

  • 14.5 cm low-profile design for applications where mattress height matters
  • Available in Single and King Single
  • Chiro Flex ES spring system with supportive comfort layers
  • Australian Made with a 10-year warranty and 150-night sleep trial

Important: every loft bed has its own maximum permitted mattress height. Always check the loft bed manufacturer's specifications before choosing a mattress.

Loft Bed FAQs

What is a loft bed?

A loft bed is a raised bed with the sleeping platform elevated above the floor, leaving usable space underneath. Unlike a traditional bunk bed, the lower area is not necessarily another sleeping position.

What mattress should I use on a loft bed?

Use the mattress size and maximum mattress height specified for the individual loft bed. The maximum height is especially important because an overly thick mattress can reduce the effective guardrail height around the raised sleeping platform.

What age is suitable for sleeping in a loft bed?

ACCC Product Safety advises that a top bunk or raised bed is not recommended for children under 9 years old, although maturity and development also matter. Always follow the individual loft bed manufacturer's age and safety instructions.

What is the difference between a loft bed and a bunk bed?

A bunk bed usually provides two or more sleeping positions stacked vertically. A loft bed raises one sleeping platform to create open or usable space underneath. Exact configurations vary by model.

Should I choose a ladder or storage staircase loft bed?

A ladder usually creates a more compact overall footprint, while selected staircase models require additional room but can include storage. Compare the full dimensions, access position and bedroom layout before choosing.
