Choosing the Right Bunk Bed

Bunk beds can make better use of bedroom floor space by stacking sleeping positions vertically. When comparing bunk beds, check the mattress size, overall room height, access style, storage options and the manufacturer's mattress and safety requirements.

Use the correct mattress and mattress height

The upper bunk must be used with the mattress size and maximum mattress height specified for that model. A mattress that is too thick can reduce the effective height of the upper guardrail, so always check the product instructions and mattress-height marking before choosing a mattress.

Choose the sleeping size you need

Our current bunk range includes selected Single and King Single configurations, plus other layouts on particular models. A standard Australian Single mattress is approximately 92 x 188 cm, while a King Single is approximately 107 x 203 cm. Check each bunk's product page for its exact mattress configuration.

Compare ladder and staircase access

Some bunk beds use a compact ladder, while selected models use a staircase that may also incorporate storage. Staircase models generally require more floor space, so compare the full outside dimensions and access position before purchasing.

Measure the room around the bunk

Measure floor-to-ceiling height as well as the bunk's full width and length. Allow practical clearance around the upper sleeping position and keep the bunk clear of ceiling fans, lights and blind or curtain cords in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and current safety guidance.

OUR BUNK MATTRESS RECOMMENDATION

Eco Kids Bunk Mattress

A bunk mattress doesn't need to sacrifice comfort or support just because it needs to be lower profile. The Eco Kids Bunk Mattress is only 14.5 cm deep and has been specifically designed for bunk beds and trundles, while still providing the supportive sleep surface growing kids need.

  • 14.5 cm low-profile design for bunk and trundle applications
  • Available in Single and King Single
  • Chiro Flex ES spring system with supportive comfort layers
  • Australian Made with a 10-year warranty and 150-night sleep trial

From $660.00

Important: every bunk bed has its own maximum permitted mattress height. Always check the bunk manufacturer's specifications before choosing a mattress.

Bunk Bed FAQs

What mattress should I use on a bunk bed?

Use the mattress size and maximum mattress height specified for the individual bunk bed. This is especially important on the upper bunk because an overly thick mattress can reduce the effective height of the guardrail. Check the product instructions and any maximum-mattress-height marking before purchasing a mattress.

What age is suitable for sleeping on the top bunk?

ACCC Product Safety advises that the top bunk or a raised bed is not recommended for children under 9 years old, although suitability can also depend on a child's maturity and development. Always follow the bunk bed manufacturer's age and safety instructions.

What is the difference between a Single and King Single bunk bed?

A standard Australian Single mattress is approximately 92 x 188 cm, while a King Single is approximately 107 x 203 cm. A King Single therefore provides about 15 cm more width and 15 cm more length. Bunk configurations vary by model, so check the individual product page for the mattress size required for each sleeping position.

Should I choose a bunk bed with a ladder or storage staircase?

It depends on the room and the individual model. Ladder designs usually have a more compact footprint, while selected staircase bunks can use additional floor space and may incorporate storage. Compare the overall dimensions, access position and storage configuration before choosing.

How much room do I need for a bunk bed?

Check the bunk bed's full width, length and height rather than relying only on the mattress size. Measure the floor-to-ceiling height and allow suitable clearance around the upper sleeping position. The bunk should also be positioned clear of ceiling fans, lights and blind or curtain cords, following the manufacturer's instructions.
